c line robert

Not in the LMIA database. Many legitimate employers file under a different legal or numbered company name, or are too new to appear. This does not automatically mean the offer is fraudulent — follow the steps below to verify.

Employer not found — here's what to do

  • Search by legal name. Your offer letter may use a trade name, but the LMIA is filed under the legal name. Check your T4, pay stub, or the signature line of your contract for a numbered company name (e.g. 1234567 BC Ltd.) and search again.
  • Ask the employer for their LMIA number. A legitimate employer will provide this immediately — it looks like 123456-A. If they hesitate or refuse, that is a serious red flag.
  • Call Service Canada to verify directly. 1-800-367-5693 — ask them to confirm whether an LMIA was approved for this employer and your specific job. This is free and takes a few minutes.
  • Check if the business is registered. Search the federal business registry → A real Canadian employer will appear here or in their province's registry.
  • If Service Canada cannot confirm the LMIA exists for this employer and job, stop all contact and report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (1-888-495-8501).

Pause pressure without committing — use when you need 48 hours to verify

Thank you for reaching out about this opportunity.

Before I can proceed, I need 48 hours to speak with my family and verify the details of this offer with Service Canada directly. This is standard practice I follow for all job offers.

I will be in touch by [date]. Please do not contact me again before then.

Thank you for understanding.

Is your consultant licensed?

Only regulated consultants (RCICs) and lawyers can legally charge fees for immigration help in Canada. Unlicensed "consultants" are a top fraud vector.

  1. 1

Ask your consultant for their RCIC registration number (format: R###### or 6 digits).

  2. 2

Open the CICC public registry below and search by name or registration number.

  3. 3

If they don't appear — or refuse to give a number — stop all contact immediately.

Licensed representatives also include immigration lawyers — verify them at Law Society of Ontario or your province's law society.

Is your employer a numbered company?

Many Canadian businesses file LMIAs under a numbered legal name (e.g. 1234567 BC Ltd.) that is completely different from the name on your job offer. Check your T4, pay stub, or offer letter signature line for the legal name — then search again.

Example: “Tim Hortons” may file as 9363-2891 Québec Inc.

Example: “Kanwar Walia Farms” files as 1254586 BC Ltd.
